Physical Therapy Students Featured in National Magazine

The March 2010 issue of PT in Motion features University of South Florida physical therapy students in an article on how student-run pro bono clinics are benefiting patients and future physical therapists.   The article, “Free to Lead,” profiles the USF BRIDGE Healthcare Clinic as one of five student-run pro bono clinics across the country that include physical therapy students. USF Health neurologist is lead author for new American Academy of Neurology guideline

Theresa Zesiewicz, MD, professor of neurology at the University of South Florida is the lead author of a new national guideline for treating nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The research is published in the March 16, 2010 issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). “More than 90 percent of patients with Parkinson’s have sleep disorders, and over 50 percent suffer from depression or mood disorders. USF Physician to appear on national television program

USF Health dermatologist Philip Shenefelt, MD, will appear 8 p.m., Monday, March 8, on Discovery Health’s popular television show Mystery Diagnosis. The program follows Dr. Shenefelt’s patient Diane Dike in her journey to find out why a condition that began with a swollen foot later progressed to her legs turning completely black. Dr. Shenefelt’s diagnosis and treatment were Diane’s last hope in a long and painful process enduring many misdiagnoses, which left her with little hope. National symposium Feb. 27 aims to attract and advance women in surgery

USF Health’s Dr. Sharona Ross launched the USF Women in Surgery initiative from her home in September 2009 to improve the odds for attracting more women to surgery.  This Saturday, February 27, 2010, USF and Tampa General Hospital will sponsor a national symposium for women who are or hope to become surgeons. USF Health Hosts 20th Annual Research Day February 19th

On February 19th, nearly 200 faculty, students, and even staff, will once again set up their posters in the pre-dawn light, preparing for the 20th Annual USF Health Research Day.   This year’s program – which includes 196 abstracts, including two from the College of Medicine’s newest program with Lehigh Valley Network – starts at 8 a.m. in the USF Health Rotunda and the College of Nursing atrium and foyer.   To learn more about this annual event, please click here: ./?p=10383  

USF Health physician now holds top post of World Allergy Organization

Dr. Richard Lockey, who leads USF Health’s nationally-recognized Division of Allergy and Immunology, became president of the World Allergy Organization this January.     Dr. Lockey, Distinguished University Health Professor and director of Allergy and Immunology at USF and James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, will hold the two-year term, which began this January, and will lead the international umbrella organization representing 84 regional and national allergy and clinical immunology societies across the world. New faculty member helps patients understand diabetes

USF faculty member Laura Williams, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating people with diabetes. Dr. Williams was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 21.  She wears an insulin pump and copes with her own anxieties by helping others face theirs. USF researcher receives top award for malaria expertise

Wilbur Milhous, PhD, associate dean and global health professor, was awarded the prestigious LePrince Medal for outstanding contributions to the study of malaria. He is the latest of only 22 recipients of the medal, which the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene has awarded once every three years since 1951 (including twice to two recipients).   To read more about this exciting development, click here: ./?p=10074
