USF-led study links high caffeine levels in older adults to avoidance of Alzheimer’s disease

Tampa, FL (June 5, 2012) – Those cups of coffee that you drink every day to keep alert appear to have an extra perk – especially if you’re an older adult.  A recent study monitoring the memory and thinking processes of people older than 65 found that all those with higher blood caffeine levels avoided the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in the two-to-four years of study follow-up.  Moreover, coffee appeared to be the major or only source of caffeine for these individuals. USF-Designed “Electronic Stethoscope” Wins Award

WUSF News – A pair of University of South Florida researchers has won the third annual Cade Museum Prize for Innovation for a device they’ve developed that uses sound waves from inside a patient’s body to diagnose health problems. Phil Hipol, the engineering director at USF Health’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), and Dr. Stuart Hart, professor in USF Health’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, won the prize for their electronic catheter stethoscope, or “eCath.”   Learn more about this story on the WUSF website: http://wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu/post/usf-designed-electronic-stethoscope-wins-award

The Marshall Center Ballroom wasn’t big enough to hold the record number of poster presentations, which also lined adjacent rooms. USF Health Research Day 2012 began even earlier than expected, as organizers let presenters set up their posters in the Marshall Center the night before the Feb. 24 event. USF Health announces the new Morsani College of Medicine

The University of South Florida has renamed its medical college the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine in honor of the philanthropic commitment of Frank and Carol Morsani. In total, the Morsanis have given $37 million to USF Health and a total of $43 million to the university. The Morsanis announced a new gift of $20 million to USF Health, the largest individual donation ever received by the university, to reach the total of $37 million.
