USF Health neurologist is lead author for new American Academy of Neurology guideline

Theresa Zesiewicz, MD, professor of neurology at the University of South Florida is the lead author of a new national guideline for treating nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The research is published in the March 16, 2010 issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

“More than 90 percent of patients with Parkinson’s have sleep disorders, and over 50 percent suffer from depression or mood disorders. Constipation and problems with urination and sexual function are also quite common,” said Dr. Zesiewicz, a fellow of the AAN. “Without treatment, these and other symptoms can cause as much pain and discomfort as movement problems and adversely affect daily routines and quality of life.”
