From the classroom to the clinicJune 8, 2011Catherine Maldonado is ready to test the future. Medical student Maldonado, a member of the class of 2013, received an armful of new books and a large helping of advice last week at this year’s Student Clinician Ceremony. The event marks one of the biggest transitions in medical school: as students move into third year this week, they start spending most of their time with patients. “This is what we’re really going to be doing for the rest of our lives,” Maldonado said. “Now we’ll get our […] |
Training teams to save livesMay 18, 2011Dr. John Armstrong, new medical director of the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation, at the downtown Tampa construction site. CAMLS is slated to open in spring 2012. The stories of certain patients stayed with Dr. John Armstrong as he trained to become a trauma surgeon. They were the patients who might just as easily have died. But they lived. And because they lived, Dr. Armstrong found himself turning their stories over and over, like pieces to a puzzle that could fit […] |
For the class of 2011, change is gonna comeMay 5, 2011The USF College of Medicine awarded 112 MD degrees. In the not-so-distant medical past, newly-minted doctors learned to dispense written prescriptions and exam room wisdom. Now they’re fielding medical questions on Facebook. Dr. John Emerson, who was chosen by his classmates in the class of 2011 to deliver the farewell address at Thursday’s College of Medicine graduation ceremonies, shared one such question with his audience. Oddly enough, his friend posted it publicly on Dr. Emerson’s Facebook wall: “Hey Johnny, I got a quick question […] |

USF at center of statewide effort to improve health of mothers and babiesApril 7, 2011For some women, it’s a matter of convenience. For others, the reasons are more pressing – a spouse about to be deployed, an obstetrician’s scheduled vacation, or the availability of a relative to provide childcare. But whatever the reason, early elective deliveries – deliveries scheduled before a baby reaches a full 39 weeks gestational age without a medical reason – are on the rise. It’s a trend researchers say can lead to serious consequences for babies including severe respiratory distress, learning disabilities, problems breastfeeding, and time spent in the neonatal […] |
First students selected for USF’s new Pharmacy programApril 4, 2011Classes for the charter class of 50 start this fall Eager to blend the detailed science he liked in his chemistry courses and the patient interaction he wanted in a career, Mark LaBossiere had no problem deciding to apply to USF’s College of Pharmacy. Sure, he would be part of the charter class and take a chance on a program with no track record. But that intrigued him all the more: an opportunity to chart a new course for himself, as well as help define a new program. Little did […] |
Experts discuss ways to protect young athletes from concussionsMarch 31, 2011Coaches, parents and even kids are more aware about the seriousness of concussions, but more needs to be done to ensure that young athletes who experience these head injuries are properly identified and do not return to play prematurely. That was the consensus of a panel of experts, including two USF Health doctors, who participated in the Central Florida Concussion Summit presented by the USF Health Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and HealthyState.org. The March 28 event at the USF College of Education TECO Conference Hall drew parents, coaches, […] |
