Practice makes perfect
May 21, 2010 — Trey Early, a certified registered nurse anesthetist, borrowed a simulator from the USF Health Center for Advanced Clinical Learning to help train USF Health staff at the Carol and Frank Morsani Center for Advanced Health Care. The nurses and nurse anesthetists practiced how to handle life- or-death situations in the operating room –such as when a patient suddenly becomes stricken with a deadly form of hyperthermia, a rare condition triggered by exposure to general anethesia. Watch him and Operating Room Supervising Nurse Ronda Westberry talk about the benefits of a high-fidelity simulator, plus the plastic patient in heart-stopping action.
The simulators have become so sophisticated, and such advanced training and rehearsal is required, that they really need to be brought into the facilities for training ,” Early said, “But freestanding surgery centers often don’t have the resources to purchase this (high-end)simulation equipment.”
