Medical faculty, staff honored as 2010 Health Care Heroes

Two USF College of Medicine faculty members and one staff person were among the winners of the 2010 Health Care Hero Awards sponsored by the Tampa Bay Business Journal. The yearly awards recognize individuals and organizations with a significant impact on the quality of health care in their communities.

Stanley Krolczyk, MD, won the Healthcare Innovation and Research Award. Dr. Krolczyk is an assistant professor of neurology and director of the USF Multiple Sclerosis Center, where he and his team conduct studies of the new therapies for early phases of the disease.

Charles Slonim, MD, a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the USF College of Medicine, won the Lifetime Achievement Award. A fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Dr. Slonim has received Honor Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists.

Elaine Adams, senior education coordinator at the USF College of Medicine, won the Health Care Educator Award. Adams, who works for the college’s Graduate Medical Education Office, USF Physicians Group and Tampa General Hospital, consistently serves as a valuable resource for USF residents and residency coordinators.

In addition, Gwendolyn Quinn, PhD, associate professor in the USF Department of Oncologic Sciences and associate member of Moffitt Cancer Center’s Health Outcomes and Behavior program, was among the finalists for the Health Care Educator Award.

Stephen K. Klasko, MD, MBA, CEO for USF Health and dean of the College of Medicine, was a member of the panel of judges who selected the 2010 finalists and category winners. Dr. Klasko was a previous Health Care Hero winner – selected for the Health Care Educator award in 2007.
