The Importance of Nurturing Faculty, with Dr. Victoria Rich

August 13, 2019

Victoria Rich, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the USF Health College of Nursing and senior associate vice president of USF Health defines how she leads by the acronym “FAST”: fundraising, accreditation, strategic planning, and tenure and promotion. The ‘T’ in “FAST” represents the importance of nurturing faculty and how that, in turn, nurtures the students. “If I don’t give faculty the resources and recognition to be valued or the feeling that they’re learning and they’re part of something that’s bigger than they are, that shows in every student,” says Rich, PhD, RN, FAAN.

Interprofessional Education

November 27, 2018

Due to the complexity of health care, patients need more than just a physician, nurse, pharmacist, physical therapist working with them individually. Results show that when a team of medical professionals work together, patient outcomes improve. Interprofessional care within hospitals and other medical practices is already underway, but, “academia has really been a little slower in actually preparing our health care providers,” says Victoria Rich, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the College of Nursing, senior associate vice president of USF Health, and nursing professor. USF Health is at the forefront of making sure interprofessional education is a critical part of the curriculum.

July 13, 2018

Beginning in Fall 2018, the USF College of Nursing will incorporate an augmented reality ultrasound simulator into the classroom. The CAE VimedixAR with Microsoft HoloLens is “changing the way we study anatomy and physiology,” says Victoria Rich, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the College of Nursing, senior associate vice president of USF Health, and nursing professor. “We’re finding that there’s a shortage of faculty that actually teach those two courses and we’re also finding, truly, a shortage of the availability and the cost to have cadavers.” The augmented reality technology allows users wearing the HoloLens headgear to visualize and interact with moving 3-D holograms of the circulatory, respiratory, and skeletal structures of the body. “We think it’s going to be absolutely fantastic for the education of all health care providers,” Dr. Rich says.

The Three A’s: How Patients Choose a Physician with Richard J. Sobieray

May 18, 2018

Patients consider more than a physician’s ability when deciding who to visit for their medical needs. “I think folks assume that if a physician provides great care and has a great reputation for that care, that that’s really the only thing that matters from a patient’s perspective,” says Richard Sobieray, MHA, MsEd, CPA, senior associate vice president and chief financial officer for USF Health and vice dean of finance and administration for Morsani College of Medicine. Ability is still one of what Sobieray calls “the three A’s,” but it comes third in priority. The first two are availability and affability.
