Falls are considered a leading cause in injury related emergencies, specifically among the elderly and those diagnosed with osteoporosis. Due to this growing issue, September 22, 2017 is recognized as Fall Prevention Awareness Day. The 10th annual event is intended to raise awareness in teaching effective strategies for preventing such injuries. Physical Therapists can assist patients by engaging them in regular physical activity, ensuring home safety, and working on areas such as balance. SPTRS Faculty Member, Dr. Jeannie Stephenson, established and maintains the Free from Falls Program at the University of South Florida. Dr. Stephenson works with DPT students to teach them techniques on how to work with patients, with a specific focus of preventing falls and increasing patient confidence.
