SPTRS Faculty Gain Recognition for Contribute to Military Medicine Journal

Dr. John Mayer, SPTRS Coordinator of Research and Professor, served as primary author in the November/December issue of Military Medicine of the article titled; Effect of Lumbar Progressive Resistance Exercise on Lumbar Muscular Strength and Core Muscular Endurance in Soldiers. Dr. William S. Quillen, Director of SPTRS, was also recognized, serving as co-author of the publication.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of resistance exercise training in correlation with treating low back pain for active military personnel and veterans. Results conclude prevention of low back pain should be of primary focus by targeting specific training areas. Exercises should involve high intensity resistance exercises that focus on lumbar extensor muscles.
