According to the American Physical Therapy Association, physical therapy is a safe and effective recommendation for most pain treatment. In efforts to reduce the prescription and use of opioids, APTA’s #Choose PT Campaign raises awareness about the dangers associated with opioids and how patients can move and participate differently in their daily lives. The campaign aims to encourage the public and healthcare providers to seek safer alternatives, such as a physical therapist. Representing the USF/UWF DPT Educational Partnership, Dr. Steven Ambler, Associate Professor, and 3rd year DPT students, Stephanie Lindsey and Bryce Showers, attended an opioid discussion panel in Pensacola, Florida. Their efforts included actively informing individuals on opioid dependence and how physical therapy can assist in treatment for chronic pain conditions. Such treatment from a licensed Physical Therapist would include exercise, manual therapy, education, and teamwork to increase mobility and assist in pain management.
