Mid-conversation, your colleague drops to the floor and begins losing facial color. You scream for help from on-lookers. Is the co-worker breathing? Is he/she dead? What do I do? Many individuals in such circumstances freeze, motionless in thought, clueless on how to assist in the situation. One’s first thought may be to perform CPR. If so, according to the American Heart Association, one should provide hands-only CPR, which consists of two easy steps: call 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Using this method, there is no need for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It is recommended for use on teens or adults that you see collapse suddenly. (More information about hands-only CPR is available at www.heart.org/handsonlycpr.)
The American Heart Association partnered with the University Area Community Center to bring the Hands-Only CPR Mobile Tour to Tampa Bay on September 13, 2016. Community partners were invited to provide additional information and resources on their particular area within the health field. Attendance from local health affiliations included Amerigroup, Moffitt Cancer Center, Florida Department of Health, Self-Reliance, and USF Health. As representatives of the USF Health School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, Ms. Rebekah Crall and Ms. Arlene Shi, both 3rd year DPT students, participated in the event by offering additional information on the USF Health academic programs within SPTRS.
