Rebecca Ditwiler, PT, DPT, Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedics, Associate Professor, Laura Lee “Dolly” Swisher, PT, MDIV, FAAPTA, Professor Emeritus, and Dustin Hardwick, PT, DPT, Ph.D., Assistant Professor recently published one of the first Physical Therapy research articles related to Covid19. The article is titled “Professional and Ethical Issues in United States Acute Care Physical Therapists Treating Patients With COVID-19: Stress, Walls, and Uncertainty. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of physical therapists regarding the professional and ethical issues they encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While COVID-19 research is rapidly evolving, this is the first study to examine the professional and ethical implications of COVID-19 on physical therapy practice in the United States.
Dr. Ditwiler said “Our research provided insight into the professional and ethical impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the burden carried by physical therapists in acute care. Participants shared their powerful stories and the experience of uncertainty that pervaded this pandemic. We hope that this research will help educators, practitioners, administrators, and students to address and prepare for these types of emergencies.”
