HCA Healthcare West Florida sponsors new on-demand tutoring for USF College of Nursing students through Knack

TAMPA, Fla. (Dec. 19, 2022) –Nursing students at the University of South Florida are benefiting from a peer tutoring program thanks to generous sponsorship from HCA Healthcare West Florida.

Over the next three years, students will have access to free tutoring from a college of nursing peer, benefiting both the student with academic assistance and the tutor with supplemental income. This was made possible through the college’s partnership with Knack and the generosity of HCA Healthcare West Florida. The Knack peer tutoring program provides targeted, course-specific tutoring to help reach, engage, and retain more students.

“Nurses are the heart of health care and what better way to ensure the communities we serve continue to receive high-quality compassionate care than to expand access to nursing education and support our student nurses in their academic pursuits,” said Dr. Leanne D. Salazar, DNP, MBA, ARNP, CENP, CPPS, CPHQ, FNP-BC, division chief nurse executive for the West Florida Division of HCA Healthcare. “We are very excited to be part of this initiative with the USF College of Nursing and hope to inspire a career-long love of learning for these nurses.”

The demands of nursing school are complex and encompass mastering practical skills and complex concepts simultaneously. “It is inherently challenging to provide tutoring for all students given the vast diversity in courses offered and hours of the day in which students need academic support,” said Karen Aul, PhD, RN, CNE, CHSE, associate professor and director of Student Success the USF Health College of Nursing. “Knack’s managed peer tutoring program has been implemented to ensure that pre-licensure nursing students have easy access to high-impact tutoring services.”
