The Tampa Bay Lightning named former USF president Betty Castor as its 49th Lightning Community Hero of the season on May 11.

The award comes with a $50,000 donation on Castor’s behalf to the causes of her choice. Castor has selected USF Health to receive $30,000 of the funds: $15,000 to the USF College of Public Health and $15,000 to create a seed grant for the USF Women’s Health Collaborative program.

“Betty Castor is a generous spirit who has given so much to this community,” said Dr. Donna Petersen, dean of the USF College of Public Health. “We are humbled at the confidence this gift demonstrates in our public health undergraduate program and grateful to her for wanting to make sure public health students can take advantage of all that USF has to offer them.”
