Two USF Health physicians – Dr. Charles E. Cox and Dr. John T. Sinnott — are among the winners of the 2011 Healthcare Heroes Awards bestowed Oct. 13 by the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

Now in its eighth year, the program honors practitioners, professionals and volunteers in 10 categories, representing a wide range of disciplines, institutions and locales across the Tampa Bay area.

Dr. Cox, professor of surgery at USF Health who works as a breast cancer surgeon out of Florida Hospital Tampa (formerly University Community Hospital), was honored for Lifetime Achievement.

A member of the USF Breast Health Program, Dr. Cox directs one of the world’s most advanced breast cancer care and surgery centers. While at Moffitt Cancer Center he founded and implemented breast cancer lymphatic mapping, a technique using a radioactive tracer to find the first lymph node to test for cancer. Before that surgeons removed all the nodes to test for breast cancer, which made recovery harder for patients.

The Health Care Educator award was won by Dr. Sinnott, associate dean of USF Medicine International and director of the Division of Infectious Disease and International Medicine at USF Health. He works out of Tampa General Hospital, where he has been director of epidemiology since 1985.

Dr. Sinnott cited his receipt of the Global Leadership Award from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in Bangkok, Thailand, as one of the highlights of his international experiences.
