University of South Florida

What to do if a hurricane approaches

With Tropical Storm Isaac continuing its march across the Caribbean (Click here for storm update), it’s a good time for a reminder of what we do at USF Health when a hurricane approaches.

Please remember that the official word about “closings” of any part of the University of South Florida will be posted at www.usf.edu. In addition, WUSF-FM radio will have alerts. And the fastest way to get emergency alerts from USF is by signing up for MoBull text alerts (see instructions below).

Education, Research and Administrative Offices: Only the USF president can close classes or buildings. Those will be posted at www.usf.edu. USF Health will follow the decisions set by the president regarding suspension of classes or business operations. At this time, all USF programs and schedules remain in effect without any changes regarding Tropical Storm Isaac.

Clinical care: Anyone seeing patients in area hospitals (including residents) should follow the emergency plan of that institution. USF Health clinical facilities will follow the university decisions, but please pay attention to decisions made in your department regarding specific instances of clinics or care for patients. Remember that many of our patients will be confused.

Essential personnel: The issue of “closing” an entity as large as USF is complex, because different parts of the university will remain open even if classes and business operations are suspended. If you need access to university buildings during an emergency closing, make sure your chair/dean knows that.

How to sign up for MoBull at USF Health: MoBull is a text alert system to your cell phone. USF uses it only for emergency notifications affecting one of its campuses.

Option 1: You can sign up with a USF Net ID, if you have activated yours.
Option 2: If you want to use your USF Health email address and password to sign up for MoBull, here’s how –

Go to the USF Net ID page, but use your entire email address as the NetID name (yourname@health.usf.edu):  https://webauth.usf.edu/login

Then use your USF Health email password.

Once inside, you’ll see a link for “Update Emergency Notification Settings.”

If you’re having trouble with your USF Health email and password, contact USF Health IS: http://health.usf.edu/is/home.htm
